It has excellent traffic communications with the nearby towns- Dubrovnik (30km ), Mostar (135 km ), Niksic (70 km ), Herceg-Novi (40 km). Its advantage is being in the vicinity of four airports : Cilipi (40km), Tivat (65km), Mostar (130 km) and Podgorica (130km).
The first data about the existance of the town can be found in the Konstantin Porfirogenit's books which say that there was a town called Tribunia there in the 10th century.Afterwards the name Travunija was given. The name we use nowadays is from the 18th century.Like many other Balkanian areas Trebinje shared the destiny of being conquered by many rulers.All of them left the trace in the architecture,culture and customs. That is why you will be able to see here churches, cathedrals, mosques but the all town walls from the Turkish period, established buildings for the municipality use, administration buildings, barracks, schools, old narrow pabble roads and a train called Ciro from the Austrian period of rule. And over the more all this has been settled on the foundation of an ancient Greek and Roman history preserved in the period of the famous Serbian royal family Nemanjici and Bosnian ruler Tvrtko Kotromanic rule.
Trebinje has typical Mediterranean climate with an average temperature of 14,2 degrees and 270 sunny days per a year. Due to the climate, people of this area grow figs,pomegranates,olives,citrus fruits,vine,medicinal herbs etc. and they lead peaceful life which is so typical of the area in the coastal vicinity.
One of the most famous European rivers which disappears beneath the ground runs through this town. The river called Trebisnjica is 98km long and with underground system of all its tributary streams it is about 187km long. The water of this river fulfiills all necessary points of the water of the first rate. One of the moust popular manifestations in this area ,bridge jumping is connested with the very river itself. The manifestation usually takes place during the summer months- July or August.
The most magnificent view of the town with five bridges is from the hill called Crkvina which is a popular excursion site as well. There is also a church dedicated to the Jesus' Mother in which you can see the tomb of the famous poet and politician Jovan Ducic.
